Who are you Becoming in 2020?
"Where do you see yourself in 10 years?" It’s one of the worst questions that I’ve ever been asked. I mean, how many of us actually know where we’ll be in 10 years?
The only time I’ve ever been able to answer this question with utmost confidence is when I was young. When I was five, I knew I was going to be in high school at age 15. I knew because my mom said so, and New York City law mandated it. But of course, nobody asks a 5 year old that question. In fact, the only time we’re ever really asked that question is during job interviews or when we’re talking about our career trajectories.
As we reflect on closing out this decade and starting 2020, ask yourself this question instead…
Who do I want to BE in 10 years?
We can grow a lot over a decade. Think about who you were at age 10 vs. age 20 vs. age 30 and so on. How have you grown as an individual? If you were to draw your life journey map, what would it look like? Have your values or belief systems changed over time? What about your relationships?
As you celebrate the end of 2019 and the start of a new decade, take a few minutes to write down who you want to be in 10 years. What areas do you envision yourself growing in? Do you want to be completely secure and confident in who you are? What experiences do you want to have? If you are goal oriented, write down specific goals (i.e. visit all seven continents, learn how to jet ski, etc.) that you might want to achieve. Then share it with your family, friends, and colleagues so they can support you in your becoming!
Happy holidays, everyone! And a joyous start to 2020!
